Bladefence was founded in 2011, and set out to provide high quality blade maintenance in a growing and evolving industry. This rapid evolution is what shaped Bladefence and its people into what they are today. We have constantly been developing our services, ways of working, safety and quality standards, and customer understanding to suit the state of the industry –today and in the future.

The history of bladefence

Bladefence was established in Vantaa, Finland in January of 2011 by Janne Niska, Joni Alasaari and Ville Karkkolainen.

2011
The start
The company is registered in Finland as JN Wind Power Services Oy. The founders start business and service development, while deepening their segment expertise. Key technology partnerships are created, first employees are hired, and first projects are started. Later in the year, the Bladefence brand is introduced and officially adopted.

Work and development
First full season of work in locations all around Finland. Activity and networking in European trade fairs. Bladefence becomes the first Nordic company to receive the Germanischer Lloyd certificate for blade repairs.

R&D and milestones
Bladefence creates the first prototype of a blade repair habitat, enabling structural repairs in temperatures as low as -25°C. First major foreign contract won: the northernmost wind farm in the world: Havøygavlen. The company's annual revenue surpasses 1M EUR.

Sorrow
Founder and Chairman of the Board, Janne Niska, passes away unexpectedly at the age of 39. Joni Alasaari assumes the role of Chairman of the Board. In the summer, a world-record up-tower repair is completed, when an 8-meter tip section of a Vestas V90 blade is repaired in Sweden. The first Spindurance long-term blade maintenance contract is signed.

Growth & expansion
Supporting growth targets, Janneniska Oy becomes the majority shareholder of Bladefence. First North American project signed in British Columbia, Canada. An up-tower installation procedure and tooling design created for the German EnergieKontor's Rotor Blade Extension project, with the design validated in a successful pilot installation in Portugal.

Bladefence North America
Bladefence Canada is established in Toronto, Ontario. Dave Zanier is appointed as the Country Manager for Canada. 90-meter skylift and service vehicle shipped to Canada from Europe, starting the first demo projects on North American soil by the end of the season. In Europe, Bladefence and Bladena announce partnership, and Bladefence acquires its first suspended platform to tackle increased tower heights and increased maintenance demand.

Market expansion and major investments
Parent company Janneniska Oy makes multi-million dollar investment to enable rapid growth in North American market. Substantial Spindurance contract signed with Suomen Hyötytuuli, spanning 39 turbines. Bladefence acquires Janneniska's long-reach (90-104 m) skylift fleet in Europe to streamline services.

Hiring at scale
Bladefence hires large number of blade technicians to meet the ever-growing demand. Largest single repair campaign to date for an OEM's wind parks in Sweden.

Strengthening R&D and expertise
To further increase safety and productivity, Bladefence launches Bladefender, a weather-controlled environment for blade repairs, announces ground-based visual inspections in collaboration with Cornis, adopts the ActSafe Ascender in rope access tasks, and receives the Wicetec certificate for carbon fiber heating element repairs. Further financing acquired to speed up growth.

Long-term customer Ecotricity signs comprehensive Spindurance contract with Bladefence. Significant repair campaign for major OEM using multiple suspended platforms as access method. Wicetec names Bladefence as up-tower retrofit installation partner in Europe.

Bladefence welcomes Kimmo Kohtamäki as new Managing Director. Further investments in suspended platforms in Europe to support on-going expansion of on-shore repair projects.

Bladefence appoints Joe Baker as President for North American operations, and expands by opening new office in Texas. Bladefence receives ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certifications, and performs first visual inspection projects with drone technology. In Europe, key Spindurance contracts renewed, and suspended platform fleet is expanded.

New HQ & Warehouse operations in Europe
The relocations are fundamental to Bladefence's plan to enhance operational efficiency and accommodate the company's growing needs. The new state-of-the-art warehouse facility in Vaasa and head quarters in Vantaa are strategically located to be closer to our customers and are equipped with advanced technology and increased storage capacity.
